The blog written about this bracelet is an overview of the reality of Rheumatoid Arthritis and how not enough funding towards research is present. The theory is that there is a huge lack of awareness about this crippling disease.  Hopefully this bracelet will kick off a new series of patients with RA who want to help with the mission of raising as much awareness as possible.

One letter at a time, these RA Awareness Bracelets were handcrafted one bead at a time –  by yours truly, to help raise awareness of the fact that RA is a REAL Disease.  Let the discussion begin at home. RA is REAl, it is painful, it is debilitating and if your loved one or someone you deeply cared for had Rheumatoid Arthritis, you would also be greatly affected.  Some of you would grow tired of the unrelenting pain and sense of loss by your partner, best friend, family member or loved one. Some of you would grow to become stronger people and learn that you had more compassion than you ever thought possible.  Some of you would bail out on us light a lighting bolt out of hell. What is the REALITY of having RA, also known as Auto-immune Arthritis?

RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis) is real.

R – It is a REAL Disease and it is REALLY painful and disabling, where wide-spread (systemic in nature) inflammation and the pain it causes call for more aggressive pain management.  It can lead to “Flare-Ups”, or periods that are worsened by joint inflammation and pain that often leads RA patients to a bed-ridden state.

E- EFFECTIVE treatment of RA varies from person to person and sadly, quite often drug regimens must be changed when pain becomes intolerable on a daily basis.  Non holistic approaches usually involve blood tests and diagnostic tests on a regular basis to determine whether or not current drugs such as DMARDS (Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs) such as steroids, anti-inflammatories, Methotrexate or Biologics to control the proliferation of bad cells in the body or Protein Enzymes (TNF) that are responsible for eating away at one’s own body.  This damage occurs within the  joint capsules. Currently there is no cure for RA.

A – ANXIETY seems to be the leading cause of RA Flare Ups and the leading effect of RA, because of society’s seemingly complete lack of understanding of this disease – right down to the family unit.  -  Because no one can SEE the pain that RA causes,  RA patients feeling isolated, abandoned, or lonely as they no longer can get out and about as they used to.  Friends and relatives grow tired of no shows and eventually stop calling.  Sometimes RA sufferers sit alone in pain and silence wondering if it will ever end.

L- LOSS of Income and adequate healthcare seem to take center stage on social media forums and platforms as two of the most disturbing and humiliating aspects of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

I- I have RA, you do not. So please don’t tell me you know how I feel.  It is not the same as your shoulder surgery last year:  you may not ever be the same but you healed from it and you do not have CHRONIC PAIN.  I have RA, you do not – so don’t feel sorry for yourself when you have a cold. Try having a cold every day, for the rest of your life.  Please don’t feel sorry for ME, either. I have RA, which is an AUTOIMMUNE form of Arthritis and very debilitating – NOT your grandmother’s disease and certainly not what “you have too” because your left knee hurts when it rains.

T- TAKE a walk in my shoes and tell me if you think my disease deserves more press, to raise awareness, to find adequate funding, to find a cure.

Y- YOUTHS have RA too.  RA is not just a disease for the elderly, in fact – it can start at birth and is often gone misdiagnosed for years because parents are not educated about this disease because there is not enough awareness of RA or JRA (Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthrititis).  Or worse, perhaps the parents are in denial or just simply do not want to LISTEN to the child’s incessant complaints of unrelenting pain.  The results can be catastrophic. The best thing we as RA patients can do is RAISE AWARENESS of RA, anyway we can.  Awareness is the key to the cure.  The first step is talking about it to a friend or neighbor.  I designed these RA Awareness bracelets as conversation starters, and  a way for women (I do custom made men’s bracelets upon request for those gentlemen who feel left out) to claim their disease and pass on the information to those in the nearest vicinity, even if the information gets passed one letter at a time, RA Awareness starts  at home.
